I’m the great-great-grandson of Karel Jaromír Erben, a famous Czech writer of the 19th century. It took me a while looking through the arbitraries to find out about my ancestors, but I did. Was I destined for something? Hardly. Though my ancestry is beautiful and gifted, these genes means nothing at all. For instance my younger brother Jakub does things completely different in his life. I’ll share something about him. He’s a rebel with a capital R. During his highschool years he followed his own path and refused to conform to the norm. How did this attitude show up during his teenage years? Through all kinds of mischief. Only now, at a mature age, his accomplishments are unequal and are of significance. Yet, he still disregards the classic model which society dictates “school – work – family – retirement.” He has had some unforgettable adventures. At the moment, he’s working in Magnetic Island which 8km offshore from Townsville, Queensland, Australia, sleeping in a tee-pee. Whenever I have spoken to him, I’ve heard in the background the sounds of a parrot or the splashing of waves. Now my older brother Michal on the other hand, is a reserve teacher who has taught at the same highschool where he once attended and will probably teach until he retires. So the kind of life we have is neither a result of genetic determination nor the consequence of our upbringing. It is the choices and decisions that we make which impacts our lives. There’s no room for excuses to leave it to fate or karma. So what now? For starters. Let it be! Welcome changes to happen, take it one step at a time…
